Hydrocarbon accumulation in basins with multiple phases of extension and inversion: examples from the Western Desert (Egypt) and the western Black Sea

Abstract. Folds associated with inverted extensional faults are important exploration targets in many basins across our planet. A common cause for failure to trap hydrocarbons inversion structures is crestal breaching or erosion of top seal. The likelihood increases as the intensity grows. Inversion also decreases amount overburden, which can adversely affect maturation source rocks within underlying syn-extensional stratigraphic section. However, rift multi-phase origin, and some cases various syn-rift post-rift events separated by multiple phases shortening. When an event followed a later phase extension subsidence, new seals be deposited hydrocarbon enhanced reinitiated. These more complex histories result intra-basinal folds that have higher chances success than single-phase inversion-related targets. In other basins, repeated occur without significant intervening extension. This produce complicated geometries. Multiple rifting affected numerous North Africa Black Sea region produced now prolific producing fields others failed. Understanding basin's sequence contractional resulting interactions essential formulating successful strategies these settings.
